Suede covers all leathers with a brushed, buffed surface — soft to the touch and matte in finish. This selection brings together Redskins, Le Formier and Christophe Auguin models made in these materials: derbies and oxfords for the city, chukkas and boots for the cold season, sneakers and loafers for everyday wear.
Suede is made by buffing the underside of the hide: supple, with a slightly longer nap, it is the most common material on derbies and chukkas. Nubuck is buffed on the grain side, the noble face of the leather: the nap is finer and tighter, and the material stands up better to wear. A third variety, cut from the lower layer of the hide, is thicker and more matte, and allows deep colours at a more accessible price. All of them are worn and cared for in the same way.
The material comes into its own in autumn and holds through to spring. Its depth of colour works with woollens, flannels and raw denim, where smooth leather reads as more formal. A navy or chocolate suede derby is a strong alternative to a black one in an office outfit that isn't a dark suit.
Three steps are enough. Waterproof before the first wear and regularly thereafter: it is the only effective protection against water and stains. Dry-brush with a crepe brush after each outing, following the direction of the nap, to lift the fibres. Treat marks locally with a suede eraser. Never apply polish or nourishing cream — they flatten the nap permanently.
Is suede ruined by rain? Less than people think, provided it has been waterproofed. Let wet shoes dry at room temperature with shoe trees in place, away from any radiator, then brush once dry.
Can you wear suede in the city every day? Yes, as long as you alternate with another pair. Like any leather, suede needs 24 hours to dry between wears.
How do you revive flattened suede? Vigorous brushing with a crepe brush lifts the nap in most cases. On a heavily marked area, a suede eraser used alongside gives good results.
